Connecting to Gordon's
Secure Wireless Network

Gordon College offers a secure wireless network that can be accessed by computers with WPA compliant cards. Please READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. You should only have to follow these instructions once. After that, you will connect automatically whenever in range of the Gordon Wireless. If you have any problems please contact the Center for Educational Technologies (CET) at x4500 or cet@gordon.edu.
Enabling Windows Wireless Zero Configuration
- Click your Start button at the bottom left of your screen, then click Run.
- Type services.msc and click OK.
- Scroll to the bottom of the list.
- Double click on the Wireless Zero Configuration, and check to see that the service is set to Automatic and that it is started.
- Click OK to continue.
Set your PC to connect to Access Point networks only
- Click the Start button at the bottom, then select Control Panel, then Network Connections (you may have to click Network and Internet Connections, then Network Connections)
- Right click on your "Wireless Network Connection" and click properties
- Click the "Wireless Networks" tab at the top
- Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom
- Select "Access Point (Infrastructure) networks only"
- Click Close, then OK.
Connecting to the Gordon_WPA_Secure network
- Click the Start button at the bottom left of your screeen, and then select Control Panel, then Network Connections (you may have to click "Network and Internet connections", then "Network Connections").
- Right click on your wireless network card and select Properties.
- Click on the Wireless Networks tab at the top.
- (Required) Click Remove for any Gordon networks that are listed (including Gordon_Wireless_Instructions, Gordon_Secure_Log_On, Gordon_Unsecure_Web_Only, Gordon_Web_Only) if present
- (optional) Click Remove for any other networks that are listed so you do not connect to other networks by default.
- Click Add at the bottom.
- For Network Name (SSID) enter Gordon_WPA_Secure.
- For Network Authentication select WPA (not WPA-PSK).
- For Data Encryption select TKIP. Make sure that your settings match the picture below.
If WPA does not show in your list of network authentication methods, your wireless card is not set for WPA. Click Here to configure the card for WPA
- Select the Authentication tab.
- For EAP Type select Protected EAP (PEAP), then uncheck and turn off Authenticate as computer when computer information is available.
- Click the Properties button.
- Uncheck Validate certificate, and make sure that the Select Authentication Method is set to Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) .
- Click the Configure button.
- Uncheck and turn off Automatically use my Windows logon name and password.
- Click OK buttons and close any Windows to exit the configuration. In a few seconds, the network card will contact the Gordon_WPA_Secure network.
- Click on the bubble at the bottom right hand corner to login.
- Enter your Active Directory Login (firstname.lastname) user name and password.
- Then click OK.
- In a few seconds, the animated network icon in the bottom right of the computer will stop moving and you will be connected to the WPA enabled, Gordon WPA Secure Network.
